A good example is garum, the Roman condiment used as freely by them as ketchup is by us. And we're all familiar with the ways in which we quickly become inured to bad smells – smelly rooms cease to stink so badly when we spend some time in them – so it's very probable that things that would smell very strongly to us, were we to be suddenly exposed to them now, passed largely unnoticed in their time. ![]() Moreover, unlike physical objects, smell leaves no trace of itself to be studied, so we are entirely dependent on written descriptions. The vocabulary that we have to describe smells is much less nuanced than it is for other senses (Gordon, 120) Isidore of Seville divided them very crudely into either "sweet" or "stinking".
